Beyond the Wine: Uncovering the Deep History of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch

Discover the stories of the French Huguenots of 1688 and how Cape Dutch architecture shaped the Winelands landscape.

Beyond the Wine: Uncovering the Deep History of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch

The Cape Winelands are world-famous for their cellars, their Chenin Blanc and their long lazy lunches. But the real magic of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek lies in the centuries of history layered into every gabled farmhouse, oak-lined avenue and vineyard row. Understand the past, and every glass you raise tastes richer for it.

The French Huguenots of 1688

Franschhoek translates literally as "French Corner," and the name is no accident. In 1688, French Huguenot refugees — Protestants fleeing religious persecution in Catholic France — were granted farmland in this fertile valley by the Dutch East India Company. They arrived with little, but they carried something priceless: generations of wine-making knowledge.

Those skills transformed the valley. Many of the original farms still bear proudly French names like La Motte, La Provence and Cabrière, and the Huguenot Memorial and Museum at the top of the village tells their remarkable story of faith, displacement and resilience.

Stellenbosch: oak trees and old souls

Founded in 1679 on the banks of the Eerste River, Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa and one of the best-preserved. Its name means "Stel's bush," after the Cape governor Simon van der Stel. Stroll Dorp Street and you walk past some of the finest historic buildings in the country, shaded by the giant oak trees that earned the town its nickname, *Eikestad* — the City of Oaks.

Today Stellenbosch blends that deep heritage with the youthful energy of a famous university town, where students, artists and winemakers rub shoulders in cafés and tasting rooms.

The story written in the architecture

The whitewashed walls, ornate curved gables and thatched roofs of Cape Dutch architecture are among the most recognisable building styles in South Africa. Developed at the Cape from the late 1600s, the style fused Dutch, German, French and local influences into something entirely its own. The grand homestead at the heart of almost every historic wine estate is a living museum of this craftsmanship.

More than a tasting

When you understand this history, a Winelands day becomes far more than a series of tastings. You begin to see how 350 years of migration, agriculture and architecture shaped not just the wine in your glass, but the entire landscape around you:

  • Franschhoek for its Huguenot heritage and gourmet reputation.
  • Stellenbosch for its oak avenues, university culture and Cape Dutch grandeur.
  • The estates themselves, where centuries-old cellars sit beside modern wine-making science.

Experience the living history

On our Stellenbosch & Franschhoek Connoisseur Wine Tour, we weave these stories between premium tastings at three estates and a behind-the-scenes cellar visit. Your guide brings the valley's past to life, so you leave understanding not just *what* you are drinking, but *why* it tastes so unmistakably of this place. Best of all, with us behind the wheel, you can enjoy every sip with complete peace of mind.
